The training changed my life and I can truly say I was meant to be there. At the age of 42 I realized that for all those years I had lived with trauma and hurt and revenge. I started to understand the feelings I had been carrying all these years. And I also realized that I wasn’t the only one who had gone through trauma. During the training I could feel myself become stronger. I understood myself better and I could deal with those feelings I had of revenge.
→ Develop a cycle of safety and respect by educating adults around their responsibilities as parents, family members and community members. → Develop and empower adults by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to deal with the impact of crime and violence on their family and in their community. → To develop adult self-esteem and confidence. → As part of this project we would like to not only provide therapeutic space, but also training in budgeting and staying out of debt, entrepreneurial and practical, marketable skills. → Develop a pool of trained community members from which to recruit CASE workers.
The Need
→ It is clear that unemployment in a Hanover Park is a debilitating factor that causes tremendous stress which in turn affects self-esteem and parents' coping skills. → South Africa has a very high rate of abuse of children largely perpetuated by men. Too many fathers are absent both materially and emotionally from the lives of their children. This can often adversely affect the child's experience of childhood and change their entire understanding of themselves and the world in which they live.
Project Activities
→ Develop and run personal development courses for community members → Select new adult counselor volunteers → Select, recruit and train volunteer counsellors to offer regular trauma support to young people in schools and to their parents. → Provide specialist training for counselors who commit to CASE projects → Provide critical support for key community members e.g. teachers, police and NGO workers
Project Impact
→ Decrease in family violence → More men involved in parental roles → Women become more aware of their rights and men more aware of their responsibilities → More positive role models in the community
